We encourage our Grammar students (K-4) to develop a passion for learning by teaching methods that combine modern tools like Play-Doh with essential skills like phonemic spelling. By using embodied learning to physically build letters, we can help the brain connect to the body for an immersive learning experience. When children learn to read with phonograms, they learn all the sounds that letters and letter combinations make. Why did our Rhetoric students study formal logic again? This year we assessed all of our students individually for their mastery in the various liberal arts and determined gaps where mastery had not occured. It is of utmost importance to place mastery over progress, as mere box checking teaches students quite an opposite lesson than our goals here at CCS, which are to build wisdom and cultivate virtue. As our students dove into Logic we have begun to understand the necessity for such a thing. Where modern society has drawn poor conclusions to social problems, like poverty and inequality, one must be prepared to accept that a quick and easy solution may not be the best one for humanity. In John 15:13, as Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure, He says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” It brings to mind the old hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by Joseph Scriven. Scriven penned the poem to his mother, who was ill and an ocean apart from him. While he acknowledges her burdens, he gently points her to the comfort found in turning to Christ. “What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Ev’rything to God in prayer!” (The rest of the hymn continues in the same vein and is well worth a listen.) It is indeed a privilege to have a friend in Jesus, who not only died on the cross for our sins, but is still willing to carry our burdens, trials, and temptations. On this day especially, we are reminded that His love is not an ocean away, but near to us in every season. Have a blessed Resurrection Sunday.

Festina lente is a Latin phrase that means “make haste slowly.” It reflects the classical idea that meaningful work requires both diligence and patience. Instead of rushing through tasks, students learn to give careful attention to work that unfolds over time. Our students recently practiced this principle while completing their still life paintings, working step by step to refine composition, color, and detail. Our Rhetoric School students just finished a literature study on Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Jane’s austere and unloved childhood, her rich education in a dim and dismal orphanage, and the formation of her faith through a dear friend, and then a caring teacher gave us a deeper appreciation for Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel. Moments of beauty amidst hardship and loss were a theme of God’s grace and presence as He leads His children through their trials. As for the romance, our students had a few thoughts on the matter which we share here: “While I wished that Mr. Rochester were handsome and young, it does show how your inner character matters more in relationships.” “I learned that I should be more sensible. Jane could have given into her flesh instead of running off to avoid temptation, but she would have missed out on the experiences God wanted her to have. In the meantime, God was working on Mr. Rochester to make him more humble.” “I love Jane, she is very thinky before she speaksy!” What is one thing you learned? “Love is not dependent on your appearance or your rank in society. We had a lovely field trip to visit the George Washington Carver National Park in Diamond, MO. George was a man of deep and abiding faith in God, a brilliant agricultural scientist, and an inspiration to many people. George was born into slavery and was given his freedom and the ability to learn to read and write by his farm owners Moses and Susan Carver. He was known as a plant doctor and “The Peanut Man.” He developed sweet potato flour and 100’s of other products from native plants. His achievements are numerous and exist of contributions to bettering mankind through agriculture innovation. Currently, Christus students are studying simple machines in Physics class. A catapult is a compound machine that primarily uses the lever simple machine to launch objects, but it may also incorporate other simple machines depending on its design, such as a pulley and a screw. Archimedes first organized and provided the scientific framework for simple machines but no one person discovered them. So grateful for our first Thanksgiving Feast Day! We studied the first Thanksgiving. From the voyage of the Separatists in the Mayflower, to their first feast with the Native Americans. We gave thanks to God for all His mercies for these first precious months. We practiced the common arts of baking, cooking, and laying a table, and we fellowshipped over the fruit of our efforts. Recently, Christus students studied the earliest known forms of writing in history class. Cuneiform writing was formed by a wedge shaped reed making impressions in clay. We spent Wednesday morning learning about patience as an aspect of wisdom. The Stanford marshmallow experiment was discussed and performed at our very table, with suckers! Each class at Christus Classical School begins with a Collect. This is a prayer that we say together each day. Our art class Collect is one that speaks truth to our children about who they are as created image bearers. Our prayer is one of gratitude and a petition for the grace to bring God glory through our created work. There are two essential processes in reading. Decoding and encoding both rely on phonemic awareness, yet are distinct. Decoding involves converting written text into spoken language, while encoding is the process of converting spoken words into written form. Both are vital! This is why you might see a first grader at Christus being asked to spell something by writing on paper or closing thier eyes and saying it aloud. They are practicing encoding their phonograms. Parent Progress Pumpkin Party time! We had our first quarter progress family meetings. Yes, that’s right, the parent and student are both present for these and they are a time of celebration, communication, and fellowship. We aim to make sure parents, teachers, and students are communicating well. Keeping close tabs on what is going on in the hearts and minds of their students is a big priority for our teachers. We don’t just give a percentage grade and a one sentence comment, we offer cultivation of character, which cannot be reduced to numbers. At progress meetings our recommendations and commendations are all within the framework of our Portrait of a Graduate: A Christus Classical School Graduate: —will be nurtured to know all things and their relationships to those, to love learning, and to use that knowledge to serve God wisely.
